Louisiana Museum of Modern Art

Located 35 minutes by train from Copenhagen in the unassuming town of Humlebæk is the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art – a uniquely charmed art gallery that remains Copenhagener’s go-to weekend escape even amidst a steady stream of tourists. An internationally-minded permanent collection is paired with a steady rotation of exhibitions from modernist masters and emerging visionaries.

The museum building is itself a paragon of the discrete modernist architectural style of the 1950s. It’s a warm scaled structure that fosters an intimacy between audience and art that’s rarely felt. “There is nothing elevated about the way art is shown here: everything is at eye level, everything speaks, as best it can, directly to people, to their senses, emotions, and intellect,” says the museum’s director Poul Erik Tøjner. “In that respect, the museum embodies the Danish values and way of life that have become so coveted on an international level these past years.”
